Fingers poised…only one author on my mind

Posted on: June 1, 2006

Lois McMaster Bujold. I wish that woman would hurry up and write more about Miles Vorkosigan, her best SF character, lovingly refered to by his friends and family as “that hyperactive dwarf.” Essentially, these books are about Miles getting into quite wonderful scrapes & intrigues (much like Jessica Fletcher of Murder She Wrote, where he is, trouble follows).

Actually, I’m sort of hoping her next book focuses more on his cousin, Ivan Vorpatril. Here’s a character Bujold has built up over the course of the series, until now he’s finally maturing, ready for his own adventure.

Her SF is great…her fantasy novels are stupendous. The Curse of Chalion is the first book ever where I finished reading the last page, and immediately turned back to the beginning to start again. The sequel, Paladin of Souls, expands beautifully on this fully-realized world view. There’s a moment in that one that brings me to tears every time I read it (no spoilers, but if you’re a fan, perhaps we can share moments…)

The third is out, but I haven’t laid hands on it yet. Why not? Savouring the moment? Why do I torture myself like this?
