1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die

How do I really feel about these lists? I’m not sure. Yes, this list has some great books. But 1001? That’s a lot, almost to the point of being meaningless. Narrow it down to 100, or 50, or even 25 — and it will mean something. It would say something about the list maker, and her/his taste, and whether your taste would mesh.

Of course, all of my faves, and other peoples’, are on this list. It’s more of a list to ensure that the collective unconscious of our generation is perpetuated.

While I’ve been writing this, I’ve been searching the list for books that are/aren’t on it. [That’s another problem: a list this long needs the “Find on this page” feature on your browser…] I have found three that aren’t on it:

  1. The Bone People by Keri Hulme
  2. The Power of One by Bryce Courtney
  3. The Brothers K by David James Duncan

What does this mean? Probably that more great books exist than I’ll ever have time to read.
